Constructive feedback from an engineer:
The internal mounting hardware was inadequate, the brass standoffs are not fit for purpose. I made a point of it by having 3 people try to solve the riddle, assuming it was solvable and I’m a clown. Only to find that a rubber plug that was supplied was the most suitable option and yet it left the m.2 card potentially flapping in the breeze. May be adequate for a one off transfer in a pinch, but as a tool: nonsense. I found some M3 nylon fasteners to get by.
Then I spent several hours trying to debug file system input/output errors produced in clonezilla during imaging of a partition. I swapped to the USB C connector (flimsy second preference to A connector) and it worked.
Diagnosis: USB A connector implementation is inadequate for power demands of high performance M.2 SSDs, causing brown out and software errors during heavy IO operations.
I’d recommend a different product, in the meantime I’ll cover the USB A end with a reminder in colourful language.
